Self portrait at age thirteen (1484) - Albrecht Durer
He learned to hide his ideas and his feelings in glyphs and symbols, imbuing his work with a culturally transferable depth of archetypes, myths, and folklore. It was equally satisfying and nerve wracking to find the balance between producing images that evoked a sense of significance to others without revealing the personal subtleties underneath. That was to be avoided. The deeper into his work, and his own mind, he became, the more concerned he grew— in a way that evaded language— that if anybody else ever saw the entirety of his soul he would simply cease to exist.
The solution was to keep the most expressive and libidinous part of himself hidden at all times, diverted into pictures. — K. Jarboe
