I don’t even read Homestuck but one my main characters, Mephistopheles, gets lost in the Short Hills Mall and needs a ride, so I decided to have them get mistaken for a cosplayer and picked up by a highly fictionalized, teenaged version of my friend Amy, who tries to turn them on to Homestuck.
Most of this novel is historical fantasy but the last few chapters take place in contemporary times so I figured: Who would immediately try to help out an androgynous demon in a shopping mall? And the answer I got was otaku Homestuck fangirls.
And yeah that’s the working title for the chapter.

This makes me sound like some sort of crazed zealot who converts people to Homestuck.
I’ll have you know I only told three people about it today!
Look man, I already wrote a novel about androgynous demons in 2003, before it was cool ok?

I’ve just seen the Magical Or Cartoon Creature Comes to Our World and Everyone Is Freaked Out And Look At How Out of Place They Are Ha Ha device in so many movies and books, so I really tried to think of anyone who would take a glowing, yellow-eyed demon in colorful genderqueer drag at face value, immediately and without question, and what came to mind was an aggressively rainbow, sugar high otaku with an advanced degree in serious Shakespeare scholarship.
Though the end result should not at all be taken as my actual impression of you, which is for the record that you really like candy and hentai. I mean, are smart, nuanced, and funny. And hentai.
