He was something of a child prodigy, but not formally educated, and spent, it seems, whatever time he wasn’t making art studying high culture. He succeeded, and got in with some of the most powerful men of his time, but he had a brooding insatiability for answers. The deeper he got into his work, the more frustrated he got. He also functionally ignored his wife for their entire marriage. Intense dude, kind of amazing and pathetic at the same time. Check out “The Life and Art of Albrecht Durer”, an old book that comes with prints, for some in depth and very readable scholarship on him
