dictionaryofobscuresorrows:
n. the smallest measurable unit of human connection, typically exchanged between passing strangers—a flirtatious glance, a sympathetic chuckle, a nod of mutual respect, a shared laugh about some odd coincidence—moments that are fleeting and random and unexceptional but still contain powerful emotional nutrients that can alleviate the symptoms of feeling alone.

The most important things
Dear 16 year old self:
Yes, do learn to speak articulately in front of a crowd or to a group. Some people will perceive you as arrogant just for using words longer than two syllables, and others will think you’re loud for volunteering at all, but this is a life skill that will ultimately benefit you.
And keep at that creative writing stuff.
Dear 18 year old self:

When Arthur Conan Doyle originally killed Sherlock...
dreamsofthings:
People went around wearing black, and one woman wrote a letter to Doyle addressed, “You murderer!”
There is nothing new in fandom.
And in the original, Watson finally finds love and gets married, and then his wife dies. So. We have more sobbing to look forward to almost certainly.
It seems the air has gone out of the Books for the last time. It’s been an...

I assumed I would be scared but I'm just hyper
For years I’ve been assuming that when my final semester of college finally rolled around I’d suddenly feel that dread all my friends and classmates talk about, but I don’t. Or maybe I just don’t yet. But I do feel something new, something extremely powerful. For the first time ever in my life, I’m going to be unattached to an institution!
At least for a little...

Merit badges for nerdy adults
Scout style merit badges for grown ass folks seem to be a thing lately, and I think they are pretty cute, though I have just spent all my money on textbooks and an Arduino Uno for E-Projects and also what the hell would I sew these onto. Still, behold:
Learn to solder.
Pentabike.
Queer Scout.
Stack overflow.
NaNoWriMo badges for “NaNo Socializing, Word-Count Padding,...

not everyone i want to love/comfort/help needs or wants me. there are beginnings that just will not be anything more than just that. there are friendships that i’d rather be a part of but they may not happen. not everyone i want in my life wants to be there. they know best what they need and do not need.

Art project idea #001
Arduino controlled, user adaptive, ghost theater light and radio drama.
The presence of theater with the absence of performers. Laptops are a liability and ruin the atmosphere. Cues controlled by the audience and pre-programmed interactive machines. Isolation rooms. Dark, textured and patterned setting. Speaking candles. Time travel. Choose your own mystery adventure. Cyberpagans.

Metamorphosis
Benedict Cumberbatch performing the classic Franz Kafka. Fun fact: it never says that Gregor Samsa turns into a cockroach, but that’s the common interpretation. Vaughn says some kind of beetle. I think it’s a purposefully ambiguous metaphor for feeling unworthy of the love of your family, because Kafka was probably writing semi-autobiographically.
Now that my insomnia is on the wane...

There's a reason this show speaks to me and now...
Devin: Sherlock is kind of my man
me: i knew it
Devin: I want everything he wears, and the mograph that happens is like what happens in my head, only it's flowcharts instead of words
me: do you see what I mean when I said he reminded me of you? He's kind of got that value of analysis over other people's feelings ha ha
Devin: Yeah but Sherlock is right, so no one has a right to their entitlement to feel annoyed
because they're wrong
me: i rest my case
Devin: I don't buy it
I think you can and should say whats accurate
it is a flaw in the emotions of the so-called 'inflicted upon' to feel breached when corrected
because one should be able to reason that because the correct party was correct that one's incorrect interjections were hampering to the collective pursuit of correctness
but that takes longer for some people because not everyone has the same sensibilities
so emotional conflict could be called...
"intellectual/talent latency"
me: I'm glad you like the show, too

Sherlock theories!
Lots of people have already pointed out the importance of Molly’s involvement, Sherlock acting out of character with the crying and actually making phone calls and taking a moment to himself, and also that he tells John to stay put etc, but I also think it might be a clue that John was made to think Mrs. Hudson was hurt and she wasn’t. There would have been easier ways to get John to...

Soon I will be invincible
My senior year of high school, I enrolled in as few classes as possible, skipped most of what was left to take naps on the green, didn’t go to prom and wouldn’t have gone to my graduation ceremony if my parents hadn’t made me. I applied to two colleges (MassArt and Evergreen State), the first because it was early decision and I could start classes over the summer and the second...

A great thing I discovered from having a juicer
Berries juice very, very well and also leave behind pulp that’s still extremely moist. So instead of any waste, I scooped it up and put it in some pancake batter, and then added banana slices while the pancakes were cooking, effectively making pink and yellow fruit pancakes which, fyi, just completed my existence.

Magic and Technology
Part of the the fun of planning fiction is getting to think about the tropes in the genre you’re working in and decide how you want to make them your own. One of the tropes of fantasy, which finds it’s way into LoTR, Harry Potter, Narnia, Dark Crystal, Black Cauldron, heck even The Magicians, is that technology and electronics cannot exist in the magical world or magical part of the...

Albus: Dad, I’m…gay.
Harry: Albus Severus Potter. You were named after two Headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them was gay and he was the wisest man I’ve ever known.
Albus: Dad, you say this every time I tell you something. Stop. Just stop.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Albus: Dad, would you mind buying some conditioner? I think we’re out.
Harry: Albus Severus Potter. You were named for two Headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them never used conditioner and he was probably the greasiest man I ever knew.
Albus: Dad, this response is really getting old.
Harry: TWO HEADMASTERS.
Albus: Yes, I get it, two hea—
Harry: BRAVEST AND WISEST MEN.
Albus: Da—
Harry: THAT I EVER KNEW, BRAVEST AND WISEST, TWO OF THEM.

All the fun happens in the second draft
Albrecht Durer being a gay wizard has become a major side plot in my NaNovel. As a scholar of art history, I am comfortable with this indulgent fabrication.
I don’t really get people who want historical novels (you know, books of fiction) to be 100% historically accurate in as many ways as possible. Just read history books. More people should. Fiction is where we make everyone gay wizards....

Sometimes
Between wondering about how to fix all of the world’s problems, and making irreverent electronic music, I wonder if Snilly shippers would pant so hard if the genders were reversed.
I mean, I totally followed boys around from 4th-10th grade and it never got me the sympathy of all the hunks. Never mind if I still followed the same dude around. Who had married someone else. And was dead. If I...
